Can paintless dent repair fix my dent?

Answer four quick questions about your dent and find out whether it is a paintless candidate or needs fill and refinish. No sign-up, and the only way to be certain is still a free estimate.

How to tell, in plain terms.

1. Is the paint intact?

This is the one that decides the method. Paintless dent repair works the metal back to shape from behind the panel, so the factory paint is never touched. That only works if the paint over the dent is unbroken. If it is cracked, chipped, or down to bare metal, the panel has to be filled and refinished with a colour-matched coat instead. Look at the deepest point of the dent in good light; if a fingernail catches a crack, the paint is broken.

2. Is it hail, or one dent?

Hail damage, meaning many small dents with the paint intact, is the ideal paintless case and the reason the method exists. A single larger dent is usually fine too, as long as the paint held.

3. Where on the panel is it?

A dent in the open middle of a panel is the easiest to work out. A dent on a sharp body line, a panel edge, or right beside one is harder, because there is less room to reach the metal from behind. These are often still repairable without paint, but they are judged in person.

4. How big is it?

Small and medium dents with intact paint are strong paintless candidates. Very large dents, bigger than a dessert plate, stretch the odds and are worth a look before anyone promises a method.

The honest bottom line

Paint intact, open area, reasonable size: almost always paintless, with the factory finish kept. Paint broken or metal stretched: a fill and refinish, still fixable here, just a different job. Anything on an edge or very large: bring it in. The estimate is free, so you never have to guess.
